Errr…I mean resolutions, saw this too many times over the last week:
One of the things I’ve been thinking of doing this year is learning a programming language. I’ve been looking at options, and came across this Lifehacker article about different programming languages. The links out go to other articles, like this one. I’m thinking of doing this not only to improve my problem solving skills, but to start getting my kids more involved in programming. My youngest son is interested in computers, he is 9 years old now and he has a aptitude for math and science. He’s in the local schools district gifted program and this could be something that helps him keep those skills while also challenging him, his normal class (he goes to another school once a week for his gifted program class) get, in his words, “boring”. I’m leaning toward Python to start, but am also looking at taking one of those free online courses. The one in the second article looked interesting, especially since it uses a kids programming tool, Scratch, a drag and drop environment to teach kids basic programming skills. Could be something I learn and then use that to teach my kids and start them down the path of programming.
